Cupboards or Cup Boards?

A common piece of furniture around the world, the cupboard was popularized during the Tudor and the Elizabethan era. Cupboards were then known as ‘almeries’ or ‘aumbries’ and the word was derived from the word ‘almoner’ a person in big households kept food in a place resembling a cupboard which was distributed to the poor. Basically the cupboard then was a place where food was kept. There were then many types of cupboard where food was kept like the Dole cupboard kept in churches which had food for the poor, the credence cupboard where food to be tasted before serving was kept. Many innovations later the cupboard came to occupy a place of pride in every household.
